Hello Everyone,

Even though my family and I now reside in North Texas I'm originally from the very tiny community of Calvert, Alabama, USA.  This small hamlet of 492 residents is nestled in the dense pine forests along the border of Mobile and Washington Counties.  Being so small Calvert is unincorporated.  What it lacks in size is made up for in bountiful and beautiful natural resources such as its rolling hills, beautiful woods, creeks, rivers and authentic Southern small town friendliness.

A combination of Calvert's location along the Tombigbee River, abundant woodlands and close proximity to the Port of Mobile made it an ideal site for what will become the largest carbon steel mill in the United States and among the largest in the world.  This massive mill which is under construction is owned by ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC.  The advanced technology facility is a cornerstone of ThyssenKrupp's Duisburg, Germany based Materials Division's new global market expansion.  When completed in approximately 2010 the facility should permanently employ over 2500 workers.

My ancestral home town will not grow into a true town or city due to its very rural location and lack of infastructure.  During our recent trip back to Calvert I quickly learned that the townsfolk do not want it transformed into a formal town or city.  Even though the Calvert will not grow greatly in residents it has gained many new businesses that support the steel mill. One other notable fact is that the State of Alabama recently completed a technical school that will provide training for the new steel mill workers.  Calvert and all of South Alabama will benefit from the many new jobs at the mill itself and supporting businesses.

I'm proud of my home state of Alabama and of Calvert.  Please take a moment and click on on the following web links to a recent televison news report (text & video) regarding the mills construction and to

Thanks,
Louis
