EyeFetch Help - Images

Uploading Images

Before you can upload an image to EyeFetch, you have to create an account. Once you are signed in, click on the "Upload Image" item in the "Site Navigator" menu that shows on the left side of each screen.
To upload an image to a contest, go to the Contests Page and click the link under the contest you want to submit your image to.
To upload an image to your PhotoBlog, you can either follow the instructions on the regular Image upload page, or you can just go to your PhotoBlog, and click the "New Entry" link.

Options when Uploading Images

When uploading an image, you are presented with a number of options to control who can see and rate your image, and also to provide some more details about the image (if you wish to do so).

The first choice you will have to make is to choose where you would like to upload your image to (through a simple drop-down menu):
  • Your "Public Portfolio", which is visible to anybody (even guests), and can be rated by any member of the site.
  • A "Contest": When uploading an image to the contest, the image will not be visible in your profile until the contest is over. Once the contest has ended, the image will show like any other public image in your profile, but will be listed in a separate section, so it can be found easier.
  • Your "PhotoBlog": If you have created your own PhotoBlog, you can post images to the PhotoBlog, and decide whether or not to share the image with the overall EyeFetch community. If you choose not to "share the image with the EyeFetch community", the image will not show in your public profile, but only to visitors to your PhotoBlog.
  • A "Public Group": You can only upload images to a public group you are a member of. Once you upload an image to a public group, the image will show in your public profile like any other image, so anybody can view the image, but only other members of the group will be able to rate the image.
  • A "Private Group": You can only upload images to a private group you are a member of. Once you upload an image to a private group, only members of that group will be able to see the image in your profile, view the image, comment on the image, and rate the image. In short, the image will be private except to other members of the private group. You can create as many groups as you like, so this allows you to create groups for wedding or other events where you want to share your images only with a selected group of people.
Once you have selected the image you want to upload, youn choose a title for the image, and pick a category and sub-category the image falls into.
Next, you can control whether or not the image can be rated. If you disable ratings, viewers of the image will only be able to leave comments, which can very helpful when you just share some snapshots with friends and family, and you don't care about receiving awards or having your image ranked.

You can also flag the image as "containing nudity", which is used to enable our family-friendly filter. Images that contain nudity can be hidden by members who choose not to see them. The setting to control this can be found in your Preferences (in the "Site Navigator" on the left, click "My Tools" and then "My Preferences").
Once the image has been uploaded successfully, you can provide a number of other details about the image, such as details about where it was taken, what camera and lens you used, and any notes you would like to add.

Public Portfolio vs. PhotoBlog vs. Groups

The primary difference between images in your "Public Portfolio", your "PhotoBlog and "Public and Private Groups", is who can view the image, and who can rate the image.
  • Public Portfolio:The image will be listed for everybody viewing your profile. Anybody can view the image, and all registered members can rate the image (unless you disabled ratings).
  • PhotoBlog:The image will only be listed in your public profile, if you choose to "Share the image with the EyeFetch community". The image will show in your PhotoBlog, and any visitor to your PhotoBlog can view the image and leave comments. All registered Members of the site can rate the image (unless you disabled ratings).
  • Public Groups:The image will be listed for everybody viewing your profile. Anybody can view the image, but only members of the public group can rate the image (unless ratings are disabled).
  • Private Groups:The image will only be listed for other members in your profile (guests and site members that are not members of the group, will not even see the title or thumbnail in your profile). Only members of the private group can view the image, and only members of the privte group can rate the image (unless ratings are disabled) and comment on the image. In short, the image is isolated to only members of the private group (and if the group is yours, you can control who else is in the private group).

Problems with Image Upload

When uploading an image to EyeFetch it will be automatically resized, with the exception of contests, where we require our members to resize the image themselves in order to maintain the highest standards of quality on the image. We accept all major image formats for upload, though some odd formats may not be recognized, in which case you will have to help us by converting the image to a different format before uploading.

When building the upload functionality, we are doing our best to test the system with a large number of images from different cameras and software programs. However, it is impossible to test every possibly scenario, so if you have any problems with your upload that is not dealt with properly through an error message explaining the problem, we suggest contacting us and we will do our best to determine the cause of the problem and fix it, if possible.

Red "x" showing instead of the Thumbnail or Image

If you see a red "x" instead of your Thumbnail or Image, something has gone wrong during or immediately after the image upload. This can happen if the upload is interrupted, for instance, and we didn't quite catch it in time to "abort" the whole operation. It can also be that we didn't recognize the image format at all.

The best thing to do at this point, is to delete the image from your portfolio, and try again. If it doesn't work the second time around, chances are the image format is the problem. You can then try to save the image under a different format, and try that. This shouldn't happen very often, but with so many variations of image editing software and cameras out there, it's unfortunately impossible to cover everything 100%.

Deleting Images

While your public profile only shows images that are visible to the specific viewer, you have your own "Portfolio", which lists every image you have uploaded. Next to each image in your portfolio you will find a link to "delete" the image. You can access your portfolio by clicking "My Tools" and then "My Portfolio" in the "Site Navigator" menu on the left side of each screen.

Note: By submitting an image to a contest, you grant EyeFetch perpetual rights to display that image on the site. Hence, images that are submitted to a contest that has ended cannot be removed from the site (else we would have to re-rank the contest every time an image is removed from the contest). However, you can remove a contest image from the site before the contest ends.

EXIF Extraction

EyeFetch automatically reads EXIF information from your images, if your camera and editing software support it. When uploading an image containing EXIF data, the some of the image details (like ISO, or exposure time for photos) will automatically be filled in.

Organizing Images

We offer various ways of organizing your image on the site. To view all the images you have on EyeFetch, simply click on "My Tools" and then "My Portfolio" in the "Site Navigator" menu on the left side of the screen. We are also constantly working on adding more ways to organize your images, like searching and sorting them, and putting them into albums.

Image Copyrights

You retain all copyrights on images you submit to EyeFetch - it's that simple! By uploading an image the EyeFetch, you simply grant us the right to display the image, but all copyrights will stay with you, and you can choose to do whatever else you want with the image (sell it, print it, upload it to other sites,...). Of course, this assumes that you had the copyright for the image in the first place. We understand that copyright is an important issue, and we will not tolerate any infringements. So don't upload any images you don't have the rights for!

If you have discovered that a member of our community has violated the copyright for an image you own, please contact us and we will work with you to ensure your copyright stays protected, and the appropriate action is taken against the member.

Image Statistics (Views, Rating, Comments, ...)

EyeFetch provides a rich environment for your images to thrive, get the proper exposure and for you to interact with other members of the community. Each image can be the "participant" in a number of events, like viewing, receiving a rating, comment or award, and numerous other things. We strive to give each member a comprehensive view of all these actions, in order to help you get the most out of EyeFetch.
Most of the image statistics can be seen on your public profile, which lists the number of views, ratings, awards, comments, in-depth reviews for each image. As a registered member, you will also find a little "info box" on the top right of each screen, which provides quick access to the most important new things on each of your images since your last visit.

As we are quite "nuts for statistics", we are always working on new ways for you to see new, interesting statistics about your images. Just watch this space, and you will be surprised about all the new ideas we will be releasing in the near future.

Image Tags (Keywords)

Each image has a set of keywords (also known as "tags") associated with it. You can add tags to your own images when you upload them, and other members can also add tags to your images. You can also remove tags from your own images, in case you don't feel a tag someone else put on the image is not appropriate. Image tags can be used for many things, but most importantly, it helps people find images when they use the "Image Search" on the left column of each page, and also to find "related" images. You can use tags to group images, and organize them so you or other members of the site can easily find all images from a specific event, or of a specific type. You can also use tags to find images for different topics, or locations.

Resized Image Sizes

We automatically resize your image uploads and various resized versions of each image to allow use throughout the Site: 1. A "Square" Thumbnail that is cropped to 80x80 pixels. 2. The Regular Thumbnail limited to 130x130 pixels. 3. A Large Thumbnail limited to 220x220 pixels. 4. The Regular "Display" Image limited to 700x700. 5. A Large "Display" Image limited to 1200x920 pixels, for the "Full Screen" display and larger screens.

The "Anonymous Low Rating Feedback" Mechanism

While we hope that everyone rates images as fairly as possible, we recognize that some people may not have the best intentions, or are simply afraid to leave a comment when they really dislike an image out of fear of retribution. So, we developed an "Anonymous Low Rating Feedback" system, which requires you to give a reason when rating an image with a "3" or below. Comments provided through this system will stay anonymous, except to the Admins of the site. You can choose not to leave any comments, but the Admins will take a very close look at that rating to make sure you didn't just leave a low rating to manipulate the image ranking, or because you have a personal grudge against the artist.

In-Depth Reviews

As an advanced feature for true enthusiasts and artists we provide the ability to leave in-depth reviews for an image. This process will walk you step-by-step through various aspects of the image, and enables you to provide a rating for each of the various aspects of the image, and also leave more detailed remarks, rather than just leaving a single rating for the image.
