When the Romans conquered a site, they prospected in the rivers. Here they found gold (as did two Astur tribes earlier); but the Roman engineers invented and used a dangerous method to extract it from the mountains. Taking advantage of melting snows and water nearby at a higher levels, they channeled the water to a specific mountain. There they constructed lakes, dikes and blind tunnels. When all was ready to produce tremendous hydraulic power, they opened the dikes and the force of the water burst the mountain. Below, workers parted the rubble and women with braided rope instruments panned for the nuggets. A tragic number of people died in the whole of this process. The gold was for Roman coins. And the Method was called RUINA MONTIUM. Today Las Médulas is a World Heritage Site and it is impressive.
Below is a quote from After Roman conquest -Cantabrian wars (28-19 b.C.)- it became an "industrial" exploitation. Romans, through witty systems, called“Arrugia” method or “ruina montium”. , took big quantities of gold until the end of 2nd Century.
Fantastic view!

LO interesante, a mi modo de ver, es la combinación de colores de las montañas: anaranjadas en la mina y verde azulosas a medida que nos adentramos en profundidad.
